Thoughts of a Novice Gardener... Part 1

Updated: May 14, 2020

"Then God said, 'Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.' And it was so." ~ Genesis 1:11 (NIV)

This past weekend, I decided to jump into something I've never done, that I've long wanted to learn to do...

I started seeds to be able to grow my own food.

Well, I hope I did.

I guess only time will tell on that one. God only knows, and it will certainly take His own miracle to make them grow since I have not the least clue what I'm doing.

Of course, the growth of a plant in the wonder of nature is His own miracle anyway, one which leaves me in awe, and one in which I look forward to taking part (hopefully) in the near future.

I found myself taking oodles of notes on thoughts to share with you while I sat in the afternoon sun nestling a wide variety of seeds down into damp soil, hoping and praying that they will sprout, and then grow and ultimately produce food.

The reality is, given that I have no earthly idea what I'm doing, I may not get a darn thing! I planted them in eggs, so they don't have any drainage. I don't want to drown them, but if I don't water them enough they won't thrive because they'll be too dry.

Even though I don't know what I'm doing, I did make a start.

I did try, and we can't know until we give something a go. We can study and watch all of the tutorial videos we can get our hands on, but until we actually give it a shot, we can't actually learn and know.

Is there something you've been sitting on the outside of, maybe studying, maybe not, that's calling your name?

Is there something you're itching to jump into with both feet?

One more question... Do you ever do something and it resonates with your very being on such a level that you know in your bones it's part of who your Creator created you to be?

What if that thing calling your name is one of those things? Something that you were intended to do when He knit you together in your mother's womb? Something that gives you such a profound sense of satisfaction, you know you're right where you're meant to be?

It may sound silly to you, or maybe not, but when I was walking out something I was clueless about, as I was putting water in soil and soil in egg shells and seeds in soil, I had that bone deep satisfaction of knowing I was putting my hand to something I was always meant to do.

I've wanted to learn this and try this for more years than I can remember. What gifts of the Creator did I deny by not getting it together and giving it a try?

May I give you a challenge?

If there's something calling your name, won't you do what's necessary to get out there and give it a go?

Archery? Seek out a lesson.

Singing? Find a teacher.

Running a marathon? (You're my hero.) Get a trainer or a training schedule.

Figure out the next step and take it. And then the next, and the next, and the next.

Our Creator has such gifts and joys and peace and blessings and more lined up for us in the things He knit into our very being.

He knows what will give you access to those moments, and I believe He wants so badly for us to know the joys of living... the joys that go hand in hand with the trials and tribulations. He wants the miracles for us, too.

So, that thing that's whispering in your ear, one might even call it a message of that Still Small Voice...

What if we step out in faith and make a start?

Heavenly Father, I pray that the person reading this would know you love them, that they would see it daily. I pray they feel your presence and are guided by Your hand to the paths You would have them walk in life. I pray You would grant them the will to want to walk in Your way, and the moxie to step out in faith and take action.

Amen.

"Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest." ~ Joshua 1:9 (KJV)

"You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore." ~ Psalm 16:11 (NKJV)

"Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of shifting." ~ James 1:17 (BLB)

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." ~ Psalm 139:13-16 (NIV)

May the Good Lord bless you and keep you, friends... always, in all ways. Amen.

Bonus song of praise... ♥
